Standards & Quality

Quality that stands up to scrutiny

At Fremantle Steel Group, quality is a non-negotiable part of how we do business. Alongside safety, it is one of the key pillars that guides the way we plan, fabricate and deliver our work.

Our approach to quality is built around three principles: understanding and meeting our customers’ requirements, complying with applicable standards and specifications, and continually improving the way we work.

These principles are supported by robust quality systems, qualified people and strong technical oversight throughout the fabrication process — from material receipt and traceability through welding, inspection and final documentation. Our systems are certified to ISO 9001, AS/NZS 5131 and AS/NZS ISO 3834 Part 2, with capability extending to Construction Category CC3 projects.

For us, quality is not something checked only at the end of a job. It is built into the process from the beginning, helping us deliver reliable, compliant and consistent outcomes for our clients.

Certifications

  • ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System, certified by Intertek SAI Global (certificate QEC8124, valid to September 2029), held continuously since 1996.
  • AS/NZS ISO 3834 Part 2 comprehensive welding quality requirements, certified by Weld Australia under the IIW Manufacturer Certification Scheme (valid to October 2030).
  • AS/NZS 5131 Construction Category CC3 structural steelwork fabrication, including surface coating and architecturally exposed structural steelwork, certified by Weld Australia (valid to October 2030, presented with the ISO 3834 certificate).
  • Steel Sustainability Australia Level 2B, for responsible steel supply (valid to August 2027).

Fremantle Steel Group is one of a small number of Australian fabricators holding AS/NZS ISO 3834 Part 2, AS/NZS 5131 CC3 and Steel Sustainability Australia certification together.

Environmental and safety management operate within the same integrated system, which is modelled on ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.

Welding

Welding coordination is by AS 1796 Certificate 10 qualified staff. Qualified processes are manual metal arc, submerged arc, gas metal arc, flux-cored arc (gas shielded and metal cored) and TIG, to AS/NZS 1554 Parts 1, 4 and 5 and AS/NZS 3992, on carbon, carbon-manganese and fine-grain steels including quenched and tempered grades.

How a project is controlled

  • Inspection and test plan agreed with the client at award, with hold and witness points.
  • Material traceability from mill certificate to component, and weld traceability to procedure, welder and test.
  • QR-code tracking of every component through cut and drill, assembly, welding and NDT, surface treatment, dispatch and site delivery.
  • Non-destructive testing, dimensional verification and coating inspection recorded before release.
  • Manufacturer’s data report compiled as work proceeds and issued at handover.
  • Internal audit and management review, and annual third-party surveillance audits.

Our commitment

Our work forms part of bridges, plants, facilities and defence assets that have to perform for decades. The quality system exists so that every component does what the design intended, and so that the client can prove it.

Fremantle Steel commenced material procurement and fabrication promptly and delivered this work to meet the project quality and schedule requirements.
